Echoed Nave

This photograph was taken peering into the baptismal font in Winchester Cathedral, England.

Mirrored World

Rescued

Dating from the twelfth century, this Tournai font was made from blue black carboniferous limestone. When full with still water, the reflection is magical as if gazing through a dark mirror. The cathedral columns, heavy and otherworldly.

When I was in my twenties the hall I was baptised in was demolished to make way for a new purpose built church a mile or so away. When visiting the site I came across my far more modest, wooden baptismal font on the top of a pile of rubble that was to be removed and destroyed. Despite my agnosticism I rescued the font and now have it in my home.
